2. The Challenge: Installing Large Installations in a Delicate Public Park
Hong Kong's "Chuan Lanterns Shine in HK" event was a Mid-Autumn and National Day celebration held in a busy public park. The organizing committee had a clear vision—but also three hard constraints that standard event setups couldn't easily address.
First, the usable exhibition space was only 8,000 square meters within a 22,000-square-meter park. Large installations had to fit alongside existing features—a boat pond, bamboo pavilions, and children's play areas—without disrupting the park's daily use.
Second, the park's hard pavements could not be penetrated. Any anchoring method that involved driving stakes or drilling into surfaces was prohibited. The installations had to be completely non-destructive.
Third, the installations needed to complement the park's existing landscape rather than compete with it. This wasn't a blank exhibition hall—it was a living public space with established visual character.
3. The Solution: Adapting Design and Installation to the Park
The project required a fundamentally different approach to both design and installation—one that respected the park rather than imposing on it.
Design Decision 1: Distributed Placement for Natural Flow
Rather than clustering all installations in one area, large Festival Lanterns were placed in open zones where they could serve as focal points, while smaller installations were distributed along pathways and near existing park features. This created a natural discovery flow—visitors encountered installations as they moved through the park, rather than entering a single enclosed exhibition.
Design Decision 2: Non-Destructive Anchoring
To protect the park's hard pavements, every installation was secured using counterweight bases and wind rope systems—no ground penetration at all. A 16-person installation team completed the entire setup in 15 days, and the anchoring method held stable throughout the 32-day event despite Hong Kong's humid coastal weather.
Design Decision 3: Themed Groups That Matched the Landscape
Installation themes were designed to complement the park's existing features rather than obscure them. An installation depicting the Mid-Autumn moon was placed in the central pond, where its reflection doubled the visual impact. A panda-themed installation incorporating Hong Kong's bauhinia flower connected Sichuan craft heritage with local identity.
