For its 7th annual Galaxy Lights exhibition, described as "Texas' most interactive and technologically advanced light festival," the center sought to go beyond conventional holiday decorations and create installations that actively engage visitors. The exhibition spans 100,000+ square feet with over 750,000 lights, and the project was delivered in 95 days — 15 days for concept design, 45 days for fabrication, and 30 days for sea freight. The solution was a 3.5-meter-tall, 9-meter-long interactive astronaut light installation featuring a facial recognition system that captures visitor faces and projects them onto a built-in screen within the helmet visor. It became one of the most popular attractions of Galaxy Lights, drawing sustained queues, generating widespread social media coverage, and earning television features on the Spanish-language program Al Rojo Vivo. A standout within the broader Event Decorations display at the center, the installation transformed passive viewing into active participation.
This interactive astronaut installation, crafted as a custom Lighting Attractions piece, captures the imagination through scale and technology. Standing 3.5 meters tall and spanning 9 meters in length, the half-body astronaut figure features a white-to-light-blue gradient body with blue-gray suit detailing, a dark translucent helmet visor, and printed identification patches on the arm. When illuminated at night, the installation emits a cool blue-white glow that evokes the feel of space exploration. The scale creates a commanding presence at exhibition entrances while remaining approachable — designed specifically for close-range visitor interaction, the astronaut extends a hand at a height that invites engagement, and the helmet-mounted interactive screen activates the facial recognition experience when visitors step into the designated zone.

The facial recognition system features a camera that captures visitor faces and projects them onto a high-brightness screen embedded within the helmet visor, with real-time processing delivering the experience within seconds. The interactive system is designed as a modular drop-in component, allowing field maintenance without disassembling the main structure — essential for long-duration exhibitions where any downtime directly impacts visitor experience. Before the installation was shipped to Houston, the team built a dedicated test rig at the Zigong workshop to simulate the full range of lighting conditions at the Houston venue — from harsh afternoon glare to complete darkness — repeatedly calibrating the camera and screen to ensure reliable performance from day one. This fusion of 1,500-year-old lantern-making heritage with real-time interactive technology is rarely attempted at this scale, and the result demonstrates how traditional craft can evolve to meet the expectations of modern audiences.
