2. The Challenge: Standing Out in a Crowded Halloween Market

Halloween is one of the biggest revenue drivers for theme parks in Australia. But when every park offers some version of haunted houses and plastic props, how do you give visitors something they haven't seen before?

Dreamworld had a clear goal: create a Halloween experience that felt genuinely different. Not just scary, but visually striking. Not just decorated, but immersive. The kind of experience visitors would photograph and share—generating organic promotion that no ad budget could replicate.

Their existing Halloween decor wasn't delivering this. Standard props and static displays generated limited social media traction. Visitors moved through the spaces quickly. The park needed installations that would make people stop, engage, and share.

3. The Solution: Four Custom Installations Designed for Engagement

Dreamworld's creative team had a vision: a Halloween trail where each zone offered a different kind of visual encounter. Working from this brief, we designed four custom Custom Light Decor installations, each tailored to a specific part of the park's Halloween walk-through.

Design Decision 1: Balance Realism with Fantasy

Rather than making everything dark and frightening—which limits appeal to older audiences—we proposed a mix. A life-sized realistic tiger for the "wild encounter" zone. A whimsical, storybook-style native bird for the family-friendly area. A gothic headless horseman for the thrill-seeker segment. Atmospheric bat installations to line the pathways. This mix ensured every visitor demographic found something to photograph.

Design Decision 2: Sequence for Narrative Flow

The four installations were positioned to create a natural progression: the atmospheric bat installation signaled entry into the Halloween zone; the realistic tiger created the first "wow" moment; the playful bird installation offered a lighter, family-friendly photo stop; and the headless horseman served as the dramatic climax at the end of the trail. This sequencing extended the visitor journey and increased the number of photo opportunities along the way.

Behind the Design: Why These Pieces Worked

Each installation was crafted using traditional techniques—steel framing for precise shaping, hand-painted silk for surface detail, and integrated LED lighting rated for extended outdoor use. This combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering meant the installations looked impressive both in daylight and after dark, and could withstand Queensland's variable spring weather throughout the event run. It's this versatility that makes them ideal for Illuminated Holiday projects—where installations need to perform reliably across an entire season.

4. Measurable Results

Based on feedback from Dreamworld's operations team and visitor observations during the event:

  • Extended dwell time: Visitors spent approximately 3-5 minutes engaging with each installation, significantly longer than with traditional static props previously used at the park (source: park operations team observation, Level B)

  • Social sharing: The tiger and headless horseman installations generated visible organic sharing across Instagram and TikTok throughout the event period. Specific post volumes were not publicly disclosed by the park (source: observable platform activity, Level B)

  • Guest behavior: Park staff reported families returning multiple times during the evening to revisit specific installations, and visitors frequently asked about the craftsmanship details (source: park staff feedback, Level B)

5. Client Feedback

A Dreamworld operations team member shared this observation during the event:

"We've never seen guests engage with Halloween decorations like this before. They're actually stopping, taking photos from different angles, and coming back later to see the installations lit up at night."

(Feedback provided by park operations staff. Full name withheld as per standard client confidentiality practice.)

6. Behind the Scenes: The Challenges You Don't See in the Final Photos

Every project has moments that test the team. Two stand out from this one.

The Logistics of Distance: Shipping four large-scale custom light decor installations from our workshop in Zigong, China to the Gold Coast, Australia required meticulous planning. Each piece was disassembled into modular components, wrapped in protective materials, and secured inside custom-built wooden crates engineered to withstand sea freight conditions. All mounting hardware and detailed installation guides were included so the local Dreamworld team could set up efficiently.

Engineering for Stability: The headless horseman's dynamic pose—a rider on a rearing horse—presented a specific engineering challenge. The forward-leaning stance created uneven weight distribution that required additional internal bracing to remain stable under potential wind loads. Our engineering team added reinforced internal supports and a weighted base plate, meeting the park's safety requirements without compromising the visual impact of the piece.
