Client Needs & Original Challenges
For the 15th anniversary of OzAsia Festival, Sydney ETO commissioned a new Hong Kong-themed dragon lantern to showcase the city's East-meets-West cultural identity and promote its creative industries, the West Kowloon Cultural District, and recent talent admission schemes.

Four constraints shaped the project. First, the display window was only four days. Second, the waterfront site demanded robust waterproofing and wind resistance. Third, the 40-meter length had to fit a narrow riverbank pathway. Fourth, the site sits on Kaurna traditional lands, requiring cultural protocol compliance.
The client initially explored an overseas on-site fabrication approach. After costing, this was ruled out: flying a large artisan team to Australia and managing their extended on-site work, accommodation, and logistics pushed the budget well beyond the ceiling. The timeline was also unpredictable.
What challenges did the OzAsia dragon lantern project face?
A four-day installation window, a narrow waterfront site requiring precise dimensional control, strict weatherproofing requirements, and the need to respect Kaurna cultural protocols—all within a tightly controlled budget.
Solution & Design Rationale
We partnered with the Adelaide Festival Centre and Hong Kong artist Vivian Ho. The core of our solution was modular prefabrication: every component was factory-built in Zigong, shipped via sea freight, and assembled on-site by a small technical team.
Why Modular Prefabrication Over On-Site Fabrication
The decision was driven by cost and schedule control. Traditional on-site methods would have required weeks of artisan labor abroad, with travel, accommodation, and per diems dominating the budget. Our approach—detailed on-site survey, CAD-driven modular splitting, factory prefabrication, container shipping, and rapid on-site assembly—dramatically reduced overseas labor costs and compressed installation into a predictable four-day window.

Designing for Cross-Cultural Landmark Impact
The Chinese dragon needs no cultural translation—it is instantly recognizable worldwide. At 40 meters, the illuminated form commanded the riverbank at night, its reflection doubling the visual impact. This landmark quality made it the anchor for Commercial Glowing Displays.

The aesthetic integrated Hong Kong's modern sensibility with the heritage craftsmanship of Chinese Lanterns. Full-body illumination created a seamless glowing silhouette. Blue and teal accents were added to the traditional red and gold palette, referencing Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour.

Verifiable Results
In four days, the dragon lantern drew 42,000 visitors to the Moon Lantern Trail, contributing to total festival attendance of over 106,000.
Attendance & Engagement Data
Based on OzAsia Festival and Hong Kong Government Information Services data (Hong Kong Government Press Release, October 2024), the Moon Lantern Trail attracted 42,000 visitors, with the dragon as its undisputed centerpiece.

Joon-Yee Kwok, Artistic and Executive Producer of OzAsia Festival, publicly noted:
"What a spectacular start to OzAsia Festival 2024! From families making a wish at Tanabata: Star Village on their way to meet the new Hong Kong Dragon lantern at Moon Lantern Trail."
The modular production model was decisively validated: costs were substantially reduced compared to on-site fabrication, and installation completed on schedule with zero defects or delays.

What results did the OzAsia dragon lantern project achieve?
42,000 visitors in four days, total festival attendance exceeding 106,000. Modular prefabrication significantly reduced costs, and the installation was completed on schedule with no defects or delays.
Client Testimonial
"Sydney ETO treasures the opportunity for cultural exchanges between HK and Australia. Over the years, we have supported numerous initiatives to help HK fulfill its role as an East-meets-West center for international cultural exchange under the National 14th Five-Year Plan."

Behind the Scenes: Precision Engineering Meets Cultural Protocol
The project proceeded on schedule without any emergency requiring intervention. This smooth execution was the result of rigorous pre-production planning.
Three Rounds of CAD Revision Before a Single Cut
The CAD drawings underwent three revisions. The first split the 40-meter form based on on-site survey data. The second adjusted segment dimensions to fit shipping container specifications. The third loosened connection node tolerances after the Australian assembly team's simulated dry-run flagged overly tight margins. All corrections were completed before fabrication began, preventing costly overseas rework.
Respecting Kaurna Cultural Protocols
Pinky Flat sits on Kaurna traditional lands. The dragon's orientation, entry path, and relationship to the riverbank were planned with reference to local cultural protocols during the site survey phase, avoiding any need for contentious on-site adjustments.
